Cascading Pull Through Braid Pigtails

Updated: May 22, 2020

Hello everyone! Today I’m here to show you how to do one of my favorite hairstyles..and surprise, surprise it’s a braid! Two braids actually, since they’re pigtails! These braids are perfect for spring and summer and go perfectly with a cute hat or headscarf.

Whenever I tell people I do hair and love braids they always ask me, “Do you follow @hairby_chrissy?!” and I’m like yessss. She truly is the braid queen! This look was totally inspired by her and all of her beautiful braided creations. Just Like Chrissy Rasmussen and all of her gorgeous clients, I am wearing a lottttt of hair extensions in this style. My extensions are from Bellami and they are 24 inches long. Literally 2 feet of extra hair! So if you have some hair extensions at home, throw them in when creating this style! If not, just know that you won’t have as much volume and length. I’m just mentioning this because I am trying to be REAL with you. I used to get SO sad that my hair wasn’t as long and thick as all the other girls on social media. I then figured out that they all had a ton of extensions in their hair! However, this style can be done on long or short hair. Despite the length or thickness of your hair, I encourage you to try this style out!

Let’s move on to how to create this style!

The only thing you will need for this hairstyle are several hair elastics. Use clear elastics if you’re blonde, or dark elastics if you’re brunette. I loooove working with hair elastics because they’re dirt cheap, easy to use, and they make your hairstyle SO secure. Elastics allow you to pull apart and manipulate the hair to give you that boho chunky braid, without worrying about your hairstyle falling apart. So don’t be afraid to pull that braid apart and look like a boho goddess!

Tips Before Starting:

-Make sure to use some texturizing powder on the braids to get them extra chunky! I love using Kristen Ess loose styling powder because it’s not sticky, but it makes the hair gritty enough to hold all day.

-This style works great on dirty hair! Just add some dry shampoo in before starting

-If you do wear hair extensions, don’t do a tight part in the back. Make sure it’s loose so the hair can drape down and cover any clip ins.

-Don't be afraid if your elastics are showing! The hairstyle still looks so cute!

Step by Step Instructions:

Step 1:

Separate your hair into two even sections (like pigtails). Set aside one section, and begin to work on the other

Step 2:

Separate your hair horizontally into 2 sections that are very even in thickness

Step 3:

Secure the top section with an elastic

Step 4:

Take the bottom section and split it in half.

Step 5:

Bring the hair forward and connect the two pieces with a new elastic in front of the original elastic.

Step 6:

Split the bottom section in half (repeating step 4)

Step 7:

Bring the two pieces forward and secure with an elastic (repeating step 5)

You’re going to keep repeating this same pattern all the way down! Remember to pull apart the braid as you go!

Once you get to the end, leave a couple of inches of hair out!

Tips for taking this style out:

-Do not try to reuse these elastics, they will break.

-Try not to pull or slide the elastics out of your hair, as a lot of your hair will come out with them. Use small scissors to cut the elastics out

I know this style looks intimidating, but I promise it's actually REALLY easy! I get so many compliments every time I wear my hair like this, and I know you will too!
